Melilotus indica L. is a yellow-flowered plant from the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) family, the family includes approximately 751 genera and 19,000 known species. There are about 19 species in the genus Melilotus, which includes weeds and grassland plants; four of these species are found in Pakistan. They are Melilotus alba, Melilotus officinalis, Melilotus indicus, and Melilotus messanensis. Although the plant is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, but is naturalized throughout the world.

Sweet clover, sour clover, Indian sweet clover, annual yellow sweet clover, floret sweet clover, common melilot, fragrant melilot, small melilot, sweet melilot are some common names of the plant in English. It is sometimes referred to as King Island Clover in Australia and New Zealand, where it is a naturalized.

Melilotus indicus is referred to as sinji and is a vegetable in Pakistan. There are numerous medicinal uses of the entire plant. Particularly the seeds, which are ground into a gruel and used for gastrointestinal issues and diarrhea in young children. The plant has strong laxative, narcotic, discutient, emollient, and astringent properties. It is applied externally to swellings as a plaster or poultice. The plant contains coumarin, which has anticoagulant properties. Additionally, dicumarol, a broad spectrum bactericide, is present in the plant.
